Matthew Griffiths wins West Wales Open !

Matthew Griffiths (Oakdale) won the West Wales Open on Thursday, after a solid round of 73 at the at Gower golf club.

Tied overnight with Ridgeway amateur, Jonathan Rees, Griffiths held his game, on a blustery and rainy day near the Swansea coast, when all of his other challengers were dropping shots.

Griffiths, winning his fourth event of his season, with previous wins including two on the PGA West Region, won by 4 shots from two golfers tied in second place; Martin Stimson (Ashburnham) and Andrew Cash (Gower), who shot 75 and 74 respectively on day two. Both players collected £400 for their efforts.

In fourth place a further stroke back, was James Corfield of Bearwood Lakes, (Buckinghamshire), who recorded the score of the tournament, on the second day, with a one under par 70. He returned to England with £100.

Griffiths wins £1,000 and the West Wales Open title, which also moves him into fourth position in the Celtic Pro Tour Order of Merit, behind leader and former winner at Gower, Alex Smith (Bavaria Holland Beer), who was unable to play due to injury.

The next event on the Tour is the South Wales Open at Southerndown Golf Club on 14th July. This is an 18 hole event and entry for professionals is £99, with amateurs (scratch or better) paying £55.
